The Welcome Project

In Guildford, Waverly and Surrey Heath, The Welcome Project and Catalyst teams work in partnership with other charities and volunteers to provide a variety of activities, support, guidance and opportunities for people who feel isolated, have lost their focus, suffer from anxiety or need a change of direction. Activities include Drama Group, Tai Chi, and Dance Therapy.

Love Me Love My Mind

Love Me Love My Mind is a small registered charity based in Epsom which aims to promote better understanding of mental health and to support the wellbeing of everyone in the community. The Monday Drop-In at St Barnabas Church began in 2006 and some 30 to 40 people attend each week. The Drop-In is supported by volunteers who ensure that there are always refreshments and homemade meals available. Drop-In members decide the programme of activities and have a strong sense of belonging and ownership. Recent activities have included music evenings, dancing, craft, talks about wellbeing and outings on the river and to London for Christmas shopping and attractions.

Movement: Exercise Activities in Surrey

Wellness with a Goal Yoga

Yoga is a safe and effective way to build more movement into your life. It’s especially good for strength, flexibility and balance.

There’s also some evidence that regular yoga practice is beneficial for people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains (including lower back pain), depression and stress.

Our yoga teacher, Abra Willis, is fully qualified and experienced in working with people who may be experiencing mental health difficulties. She’s also experienced in adapting her approach to clients with injuries (the common ones are knee or back injuries), giving you alternative instructions that fit around your needs.

Riverside Rebels Running Groups

Riverside Rebels is a fun and friendly running group, created specifically for beginners. Designed for people of all shapes and sizes, who want to laugh, learn and run together in a relaxed and nurturing atmosphere, they offer convenient meeting points for Walton, Weybridge, Sunbury and Shepperton residents who want to get moving, get fit and make new friends. Sessions are a combination of fitness activities, games and running and at only £3 per session are incredible value for money.

Exercise Referral and Gym Referral Schemes

These schemes enable healthcare professionals to refer patients for supervised exercise at an affordable cost. all referring healthcare professionals need to be registered to the scheme. You can contact the Health Development Officer to find out if your healthcare specialist is registered. There is the option to do classes, attend the gym or combine the two. All the classes and gym sessions are taught by highly qualified, supportive and experienced instructors.

Healthy Walks and Cycle Rides

This scheme has been up and running for more than 11 years with both regular and new people joining weekly. Walks are great for meeting new people, filling your lungs with fresh air and discovering new places in your local area.

With Walking for Health, you can take part in a free short walk near you to help you get active at a pace that works for you.

Free walks of varying distance and pace lasting from 15 minutes to 3 hours take place around the Borough nearly every day.

Sandown Cycle Classes

Get on your bike at Sandown Cycle, Esher’s first dedicated indoor group cycling studio. This brand new studio features 18 high spec Startrac bikes in a fully air-conditioned studio. With the instructor stage elevated upfront, you’ll have full view of the teaching and communication for a really enjoyable class. Indoor Cycling is so popular due to the fact you can go at your own pace against your own resistance – you are in control. For what’s classed as a high-intensity workout, it’s surprisingly low impact on your bones and joints, making it great for all ages!

The first class is free, and then costs £8 a class for non-members. If you buy a block of 12 it’ll cost you £6.66 a session.

On most courses, discounted fees are available for eligible learners.

The fees shown on the websites and brochures are subsidised by a grant from the Skills Funding Agency.

You will qualify for the subsidised fees if you are aged 19 years or over and:

Are a national of any European Union (EU) country or are the spouse, civil partner or child of an EU national and have been continuously resident in the European Economic Area (EEA) for at least the three years before the start of your course.

If you are over 19 years of age, you may claim a 50% discount on a maximum of two courses at the same time if, at the time of enrolment, you are in receipt of any of the following:

  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Carers Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Income-based Employment and Support Allowance
  • Contribution-based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Pension Credits (Guarantee Credit only)
  • Working Tax Credit with gross annual household income of less than £15276 a year

They will need to see proof of receipt of your benefits. They must be dated no older than 6 months and valid for the duration of your course.
The 50% discount may also apply to the unwaged partners or dependants of benefit claimants. To qualify, you will need to supply proof of co-residence, e.g. council tax statement, when you enrol. If you are 64 years of age and over and not in full-time paid employment on the first day of your course, you may claim a 15% discount.

The Lightbox

The Lightbox runs a range of workshops for adults, from drawing classes around the gallery (suggested donation £2) to craft sessions in the Education Studio. There are three galleries which have regularly changing exhibitions and a permanent local history musuem ‘Woking’s Story’.
